Shirley Cross Obituary


Shirley Mae Cross, of Hartford was born June 9, 1937, in Oak Park, Ill, the daughter of Charles and Mae (Nedved) Verrill.


Shirley passed away Saturday, Oct. 31, 2020, at The Timbers of Cass County, Dowagiac at the age of 83.


Shirley was named after the actress Shirley Temple. She married Russell Cross Sr., on May 23, 1959. Together they owned and operated Cross’s Corner in Hartford. Shirley was also an employee of H and R Block doing taxes for over 30 years in Chicago.


Russell passed away on March 4, 2005. Also preceding Shirley in passing was a sister, Marilyn Wyler.


Shirley leaves behind to cherish her memory three children: Russell (Ronda) Cross Jr., of Dowagiac, Lori (Jerry McNutt) Cross of Hartford, and Charles (Joanne Martini) of Hillside, Ill. She is also survived by a granddaughter, Marissa Cross; and a sister, Charlene (Lee) Weir of Sunrise, Ariz.


As to Shirley’s wishes, cremation has taken place. The family will have a gathering of family and friends at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Shirley’s name may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. The Calvin Funeral Home in Hartford is assisting the family with arrangements.
