Virgie Lee Davis, 95, of Lawrence passed away peacefully at Royalton Manor Nursing Home in St. Joseph.
Born in Caraway, Ark., in 1930 to Oscar Ryan and Minnie Gertrude Bishop, Virgie grew up with a deep love for family, faith and the simple joys of life. She was of seven children to Oscar and Minnie. On July 15, 1945, she married the love of her life, Charles R. Davis and together they built a beautiful life and raise five children.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charles Davis; her son, William Davis; son-in-law, Phil Sechrist and one cherished granddaughter, Rebekah Robertson. She is also preceded in death by her six siblings.
She is survived by her children: Patricia (Kyle) Morrison of Lawrence, Cathy Sechrist of Goshen, Ind., Cheryl (Gerald) Hughes of Columbia, S.C., Timothy (Kathy) Davis of Benton Harbor as well as her daughter-in-law, Marilyn Davis of Bradenton, Fla.
Virgie was blessed with a large and loving family including 20 grandchildren (19 living and one in heaven), 48 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren (one in heaven).
A devoted homemaker, Virgie poured her heart into caring for her family and her home. She was known to be a loving babysitter to family and neighbors through the years. Her garden was her pride and joy – full of beautiful flowers and the freshest vegetables. If she wasn't in the house, you could find her outside tending to her garden or relaxing on the porch, inviting you to sit for tea and a chat. She was a true friend to all that knew her.
Virgie was an exceptional cook and baker – famous for her delicious pies and her unforgettable chocolate gravy and biscuits. There was always a seat at the table in her kitchen for those to come and enjoy a meal. You were not leaving on an empty stomach; she made sure of it!
She loved to sit and play games with her grandkids. Uno was certainly her favorite game. She always made sure to give you that Draw Four just in time to win the game. She liked to tease, and laugh. It was her way of letting you know that she loved you.
Her Christian faith was the cornerstone of her life. She loved to sing out to the Lord and had such a beautiful voice. Her praises were many and she lived her days with joy, grace and gratitude. She is leaving a legacy of love that will continue to bless her family for generations to come.
