Caskets are specially designed boxes built from various woods, metals and steel made to contain the body of a deceased person. Caskets are typically used during visitations and funeral services for viewing the body. After the funeral services, if cremation has not been selected, the casket containing the body will be lowered into the ground during the committal ceremony at the cemetery.
Vaults are required by cemeteries and are lined and sealed outer receptacles that house the casket after burial. It protects the casket from the weight of the earth and ensures proper ground maintenance. It also keeps water from getting inside the casket area and prevents the ground in the cemeteries from settling.
Urns are containers that are designed to hold the cremated remains of a deceased person. Examples include traditional urns made of marble, wood, bronze or ceramic. There are also biodegradable urns for scattering ashes available. The purchase of an urn is not mandatory but may be required for burial in a cemetery or mausoleum.
