Irmgard Reed Obituary

Irmgard Reed, 85, of Lawrence was called home Dec. 14, 2014, after a short illness at home.

Irmgard was born Nov. 20, 1929, in Zell am See, Austria, the daughter of Joseph Ubell and Ella Moeckel Ubell. Irmgard was preceded in passing by her husband, James Ransom Reed; recently by her daughter, Sandra J. Dimas; four sisters: Dorlee, Gerda, Hilde and Marianne; two brothers: Rudy and Kurt; and her parents.

Irmgard was united in marriage to Sgt. James Ransom Reed on Aug. 9, 1952, in Zell am See, Austria. Irmgard left her small village to become an Army wife and to see the world. They traveled extensively, and in 1978 settled back home in Lawrence.

Irmgard is survived by four children: Wallace (Luise) Reed of Munich, Germany; James (Joan) Reed of New York; Donna McIntyre of Paw Paw; and Betty Reed of Lawrence; a son-in-law, David Dimas of Hartford; nine grandchildren: Marc (Tabea) Reed, Joseph (Karen) Reed, Melanie (Martin) Severin, Jeremy (Katherine Gressel) Reed, Veronica McIntyre, Alexander Reed, Christopher Dimas, David Dimas and Kaitlyn Dimas; and eight great-grandchildren: Derek McIntyre, Aleesya McIntyre, Salome Reed, Silas Reed, Nathaniel Severin, Sean Moon, Elia Severin and Yael-Grace Severin. Irmgard loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren with all her heart. She was amazed at how talented and special they all are.

Irma is also survived by four sisters-in-law: Josephine Stone, Audrey Wilson, Ethelyn Pasterick and Belle Gilbert; a nephew, Evert (Leah) von Englenburg and his three children, Astrid, Rogier and Saskia, and their children, all residing in the Netherlands; and multiple nieces and nephews residing in the United States.

While growing up in Zell am See, Austria, Irmgard enjoyed skiing, ice skating, swimming, canoeing, mountain climbing and hiking. In her later years, she loved growing flowers and vegetables in her many gardens. Irmgard loved going for long walks and traveling to new places. One of her greatest passions was sewing, a talent she inherited from her grandfather, who was a tailor.

The family will have a private viewing for close family members with a graveside service at Maple Hill Cemetery, Hartford, today, Dec. 17, 2014.

Irmgard's final journey takes her from our lives, but not from our hearts. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Those wishing to leave memorial condolences for the family may do so at http://www.calvin-leonardfh.com.
